one room challenge- week 2

Its week 2 out of 6! Had this feeling that I had been super productive on the one room challenge this week, but don’t have too much to show for it. A lot of the progress was mental. Figuring out what was going in the space, what I still needed, what was being painted, how it was being painted, where I would be using certain fabrics, etc. Because I’m not working on a room in my own home, the steps I’m taking here are a little backwards. Details and furniture are usually my last steps but this week I focused on some furniture pieces. As mentioned, we need a space for my sister and the family to work, so I found a pair of rattan chairs at a thrift store for $40 and a rattan base glass table on Facebook also for $40.

If you are following along on Instagram, you’ll see my process of moving in hyper speed during Margo’s naptime to get it all quickly painted. I thought I’d receive lots of grief for spray painting these rattan chairs and dining table but a lot of y’all were on board with my bold decision. I LOVE the darker wood tone rattan in these chair but all the wood tones started competing.

*design tip- when pairing furniture together, it’s important to pay attention to balance. Think about the number of wood tones, the painted pieces vs natural, etc. Try mixing in metals or stone to keep the rooms’ elements from repeating.
Another reason I went with the bold paint for the chairs and table is because we are going to be using darker upholstery for seating as to withstand pet hair and kid wear and tear. Bringing in bright colors helps the dark upholstery not feel too serious. This is a sunroom and my sister has more of a traditional style. Traditional style can get kinda stuffy if you aren’t careful. The last thing you want for a sunroom is for it to feel serious and stuffy.
Speaking of upholstery, my hope for next week is to tackle recovering some club chairs and the sofa cushions. One of my goals for this ORC was to refresh my sewing skills, and I’m kinda nervous and hopeful about the challenge. Wish me luck!

AND… in the meantime go check out some of the really cool projects going on at the ORC website. https://www.oneroomchallenge.com/
